After School
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
New LA Middle School's after school program is run at NO COST TO PARENTS because New LA has been awarded a grant from the state to pay for the program (ASES). HOWEVER, in order to continue to qualify for ASES grant and be able to provide the program as a FREE service to New LA families, there are some specific requirements that pertain to enrollment and attendance.
In order to attend the after school program for FREE, students must be actively enrolled, attend a minimum of 3 days a week, and stay at least until 6:10pm. If spots fill up, priority enrollment is given to students who need to use it 5 days.
Program Goals:
- Provide children with opportunities to participate in educational, youth development, health, safety, cultural & recreational activities and access to services;
- Build partnerships to increase learning opportunities for children;
- Work with communities, schools and organizations to plan, implement, expand, coordinate and evaluate the After School Programs;
- Participate in quality service-learning experiences that address community needs, provide community connections, enhance academic learning, stimulate healthy youth development and promote civic responsibility.
Key Components include:
- Daily Homework Center: homework assistance, group work, and access to chrome books;
- Enrichment classes: Fun, hands-on and “disguised learning” activities in arts and crafts, gardening, cooking, inventions, drama, and more!
- The Young Musicians Foundation runs our Music Program on Wednesdays: Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, and Voice (3:45-4:45 pm - 6th grade classes / 4:45-5:45 pm - 7th and 8th grade classes);
- Physical Activity: Sports teams.
